Channeler
The Channeler is a scary customer due to his ability to “Channel” spirits, and even higher beings if they are good at what they do. Much like the Medium in this aspect, but the Channeler will have the ability to do this with spirits that are on the planet, or within certain hells, heavens, and other, that are willing and able to be channeled.
To explain this, the Channeler can take on the abilities, traits and powers of the dead that are willing to allow them their powers. A human can actually become a god with this ability, but only for short periods of time. It cost copious amount of energy for anyone to be able to pull this off and as such most Channelers will try and defeat their opponents as quickly as possible. Not only does this drain will, it also consumes Stamina in great amounts. Thus, the fight can only take so long, or the Channeler will be defeated.
They can use their abelites for other reasons than just fighting, though, and most do. The Channeler can channel a thief to pick pockets in a crowded room. They can use the abilities of an escape artist to get out of a jail or building. They can use the abilities of trappist to set traps for those that are following them. They can, and this is the most common used, pull forth a spirit for the family to say good buy. This does cost a great deal and doesn’t always work, but when it does, the family member that had passed on will be able to use the body of the Channeler to speak with the other family members. This will not be a control thing where the spirit takes control of the Channeler, unlike with the Medium. The Channeler not only stays in control at all times, but can sever the connection at any point. However, the traits of the person that they were Channeling will slowly become the traits of the Channeler due to the fact that when the spirit is in them, the synapses of the Channeler are firing just as those of the spirit. For this reason, the Channeler has to be very careful who they let in and for how long. The longer they stay, the more the Channeler’s persona will alter to that of the spirit.
Using the abilities of a spirit will bring on the same changes as Channeling them directly, but it takes a much longer time. The user may also cut themselves off from the spirit so that they don’t hear their thoughts or reasoning for doing something and simply do it. This will delay the transfer of persona onto the user, but will usually piss of the spirit. Many Channelers prefer this and try to do it as often as possible, but the spirits will, eventually, stop helping and the Channeler will have to find new spirits to Channel in this way.
A good Channeler, will find a group of spirits that had particular talents and that were similar in persona to themselves. This will allow them to borrow the abilities, talents, etc. without worry of altering their own personality very much. However, this causes other issues that will arise over time. If a Channeler uses a spirit for long periods of time and the two of them start to connect very well, the spirit will be able to enter the body of the user whenever. Thus, the user is asleep and the spirit comes into their bodies with full control. The body doesn’t realize its not the same consciousness and therefore treats the host conscious as the spirit. When this happens, the host is on the joy ride until the spirit runs out of steam. Only then can they get their body back. This is a nightmare scenario for any Channeler, but happens more often than anyone would like to point out.
The Channeler can not be harmed by indirect magic. This is due to the spirits that constantly go in and out of their bodies, and will alter the affects of magic each time. Due to this, the area effect of a spell will only take hold for one round and then be removed from the Channeler as if it did not exist. A direct attack deals all of its damage, abilities, etc. without fail.
Note: The Channeler can not force a spirit into submission and often will have to talk them into helping before they can start to use the abilities. The spirit will usually want something in return.
Note 2: The Channeler will have heightened mental defense and can not be the target of mental attacks that “take over” the mind. Hypnosis will not work on the Channeler, rather to harm or benefit them.
Note 3: Most Channelers are born as such and can not change this ability or deny it. Some gain the ability after they die and are brought back, but this is rare. Some are granted the ability through a higher being or some spell or curse. The issue with this is that their abilities will not be as powerful as a natural born Channeler.
Note 4: Channelers can see spirits, and anything that is of the same spectrum. Due to this, they can see God-Slayers, Demons, and Angels. This is exceptionally dangerous for the reason that these beings do not attack mortals is because they do not see them. Once one of these beings knows that the user can see them, there is some unwritten rule (or possibly it is written somewhere in some forgotten text) that allows them to directly go after the user. Therefore, most Channelers will pretend not to see the spirits in the hopes of not raising the ire of these beings. It is a very scary things for the Channeler.
