Medium
To become a Medium one must first master Hypnosis and be at least a portion of the way through Precognition (two tiers). Though come have done it without Precog and instead learned Divination (three tiers) for the abilities. The Medium is endowed with their abilities from the Gods, Malds, Supre Malds and some even Suprema. Those that are very good at their craft can summon any spirit from the underworlds, the Abyss, any hells or even any heavens (this takes exceptional skills and a great deal of will power since heavens are virtually impenetrable by the outside.). Due to this they are sought after for certain secrets and foresights. However, the Medium is rarely a good person as they often got to their position by crooked terms and side deals. Rarely is a Medium truly a good person and even more rarely, are they willing to help others for no reason. There is always a price for their talents.
Though it may seem as though this ability would be lowly sought after due to its nature of not being an offensive or defensive weapon, it is actually highly sought after in the realms of mortals due to its ability to find things, unearth things, reconnect people, etc. Also, using the abilities of the Medium, the Medium can actually “borrow” the powers and abilities of those that they are speaking with for a short time. Some have learned how to actually cage these spirits and hold them for future use (The Soul Trapper is much better at this, but the Medium is a fair hand.).
Medium’s can find guides that will help them in their endeavors, keep them out of danger and even tell them future events. These guides are usually selfish and wanting something for themselves but their help is mutually beneficial, thus the union carries on.
A Medium can’t be Hypnotized at all. They can not be the target of spells, though they can be affected by them. (Something about the way their bodies process Metophic Energy causes the spells not to latch on to them, but rather something in their immediate vicinity.) They can not use mental abilities beyond Precognition, divination or the occasional telepathy (The same reason for the spells not targeting also disrupts their own ability to cast their thoughts outside themselves.).
Mediums are great with magics and can be the conduit of any magic as long the target is not themselves. This causes many of them, after mastering Medium, to become magic users of different types of magic. Most will choose blue because it is easy to learn and gives them a long life span, but the issue is that the blue can not affect them directly and as such it can only prolong their life span by a few hundred years rather than eons like most mortals.
Mediums also have a small issue that if they pull forth a spirit that is more willful than themselves, the spirit can actually swap places with the Medium and take over their body until the will exchange slows and the spirits will drops below that of the Medium. This happens from time to time with those that are just starting out as Mediums, which is why they practice their crafts on monastery grounds in locked cages so that the spirit can not escape. Then they just wait out the exchange and get their bodies back. Once done, they simply break the connection and the spirit is sent back. (No Medium would ever try to pull forth another Medium of old for fear that the Medium would simply cut the ties with the Medium and life out the rest of their days as the Medium. This has actually happened twice in history.)
A Medium, on the battle field, is a slow starter due to the fact that pulling forth their spirits takes time and determination (lots of will) and a good deal of focus as well. Since they have learned that this leads to death, most of the Mediums either will not fight and choose to run or they will gain several guides to help them at the beginning of a fight. (Those that have magic will later abandon this as it is costly, but until they learn a magic to go with their abilities, they often will use this as their means of defense.) By doing this, they will have the ability to allow one of the guides to fight alongside them, granting their abilities to the Medium for short times during the battle. This means that the Medium may well be a Barbarian, taking on all the stats of however high the Barbarian was in life, for 5 to 7 rounds. Then switch and be a Mage for 3 rounds. Each round will cost them a great deal of will, but if they can end the battle early, this is a great trick. Most people avoid fighting Mediums for this very purpose.
Note: A Medium needs 10 rounds to pull a spirit and every time they attack or defend, this is started over. This is why they use guides instead. A guide is a spirit that has already been pulled and will come in within 2 rounds without the Medium needing to pull them. Once on the field of battle, the Medium can use their talents any time, but has to pay the will cost every time the guide is used. After the second use, the will cost doubles. Having several of these guides on the field is preferable and prudent to the long life of the Medium.
Note 2: Demon-Gods hate Mediums and will work with them only if there is something great beneficial to the Demon-God. The Medium takes souls out of their hells and the soul loses the pain that they were going through, which squeezes soulmere from their batteries. Every time they have a reprieve of the pain, the soulmere goes back to its normal use and the spirit will take years of pain to get back to the point they were at when in hell the first time. (It is common knowledge that a soulmere that is constantly bombarded with negative – feelings, emotions or pain, will begin to pump more power out due to its natural defenses. This is why many of the Demon-Gods setup their realms the way they do. When that daily bombardment is lifted, even for a second, the soulmere reverts to its natural state and the process has to be started over.)
Note 3: Medium can not use Purple Magic of any sort as the magic has a dislike of their abilities and will actually blow up in their face. Most of the time magics of sentience will take years before coming to investigate someone using their abilities and essence. Only then will the magic take note and grant extra abilities to the user and only if the magic is impressed. Some magic users go their entire lives never feeling the presence of the magic at all, and some will feel the presence and accelerate their abilities within months of training. A Medium using even the smallest amount of purple, even through an enchantment, will trigger an attack from the purple that usually will leave the Medium missing something. (Sight, sound, arms, legs, something).
Note 3 : Though Mediums are hated by most Demon-Gods, almost all of the Mediums will find a Demon-God to work with in their endeavors. This allows the Medium the ability to see future events and current, through the eyes of the Demon-God. (This will give them great insight into things that they would not usually have.) In exchange, the Demon-God will be able to use the mortal to their own will in varying ways. If the Medium grants the Demon-God their soul, then their power is far greater than before, but once the Demon-God sees no use of the Medium, they will claim what is theirs. Also, when this type of union is allowed, the user can actually “borrow” the abilities of any soul within the Demon-Gods lair (hell) and as such will be able to use a vast amount of abilities that will be readily available as if all of those souls were their guide. They can sometimes even use the powers and abilities of any demons within the lair as well. This is rare, but it does happen.
